APHA National Points
APHA, American Paint Horse Association is the national registry for paint horses. Among the benefits of being a member is that registered horses earn points at approved shows, which are sponsored by chartered clubs. The points scale is published in the APHA rule book and is based on every three horses entered in a class. Halter grand and reserve champions will receive additional points.
Points are accumulated from year to year and maintained on the horse's record forever, along with awards and titles.
To earn APHA points the owner must be a current member of APHA.
APHA Titles and Awards are based in points earned within categories and in Open, Amateur, Novice Amateur, and Youth Divisions.
APHA Supreme Champion
APHA Superior All-Around Award
APHA Performance Versatility Award
APHA Champion Award
APHA Superior Event Award
APHA Honor Roll Award
APHA Register Of Merit (ROM)
Plus other awards as described in the APHA Rule Book
APHA awards and titles justify the value of an individual horse and prove the breeding and ability of the lineage. It also is a credit to the owner, exhibitor, and trainer.

CCC (State) Points
California Coordinating Committee is an ad hock committee that was formed to coordinate the Paint Horse clubs throughout California and provide a statewide awards program. Every APHA chartered club in California has two representatives in CCC. California has 11 Paint Horse clubs:
CCPHC Central California Paint Horse Club
CPHA California Paint Horse Association
GLAPHC Greater Los Angeles Paint Horse Club
GSPHC Golden State Paint Horse Club
NCPHC Northern California Paint Horse Club
PCPHC Pacific Coast Paint Horse Club
SJPHC San Joaquin Paint Horse Club
SCPHC Southern California Paint Horse Club
SPHC Sierra Paint Horse Club
TMVPHC Temecula Valley Paint Horse Club
7CPHC Seven Counties Paint Horse Club

CCC helps keep Paint horse owners aware of the news within the national association, California clubs, and throughout the horse industry.

CCC maintains a calendar of shows sponsored by the APHA chartered clubs within the state. This is to insure that there is not more than one APHA show on the same day, making it impossible for owners to exhibit their horses at every opportunity.

CCC requires that all clubs mail CCC approved shows premiums to all members of every California club.
CCC offers Year-End Awards, which include:
California State Champion and Reserve Champion Titles in Open, Amateur, Novice Amateur, and Youth Classes
Several Memorial Trophies and Awards
Special incentive awards

CCC sponsors a Year-End Awards Banquet to publicly recognize the winners.

Every year CCC publishes the California Paint Horse Directory, which is mailed to every member of a local club. The directory contains the following:
CCC Guidelines
Lists show & other important date schedule
Show and exhibitor requirements
Points Tabulation Chart
Classes which receive state awards
Lists California State Award Winners
California paint horse clubs membership list
Advertising of many stallions, trainers, exhibitors, products, and services

To earn state points, the owner of the horse must be a current member of a California club.

An exhibitor may show at all approved shows, but only the best 25 judgings will count toward any one award. Futurities and money classes do not count toward any CCC award.

A horse/amateur/youth must earn points under 7 judges and earn a minimum of 20 points in the specific class to qualify for a year-end award.

The Walk-Trot High Point and class awards will remain at 11 & Under (APHA is 5-9 years). Clubs will specify that the CCC walk-trot classes (11 & Under) are the only ones that will count towards the year end High Point and class awards.

In order to receive an award, all debts owed to any California club must be paid in full.

Clubs may hold as many APHA approved shows as they want to, but only six judges by each club will count toward CCC awards. Be sure to check for "CCC Approval" on premiums or check the directory calendar.

CCC State Points Keeper is 8 Oaks Show Services, Don & Gladys Gilbertson and Associates, contact them at email paintshow@8oaksshowservices.com

CCC state points are available at most shows, sent to local clubs, and the most current available at www.horseservices.com/ccc

NCCC Awards Program
NCCC, Northern California Championship Circuit, is an awards program established by five clubs to encourage people to show at the Northern California and Nevada shows. Each of the 5 clubs has representatives on the NCCC committee. The clubs vote on rules. NCCC members vote for committee officers. The participating clubs are:
CPHA - California Paint Horse Association
NCPHC - Northern California Paint Horse Club
NPHC - Nevada Paint Horse Club
SJPHC - San Joaquin Paint Horse Club
SPHC - Sierra Paint Horse Club

NCCC is funded by participating club annual fee, membership dues, horse(s) nomination fees, sponsorships, raffles, and money-making events. All monies go towards year-end awards except a nominal amount paid to a pointskeeper.

Most APHA approved shows sponsored by one of the participating clubs counts towards NCCC. Watch the show premiums for NCCC approval. Also, the NCCC rules have listed all the approved shows.

To earn NCCC points:
The owner must be a current member of one of the participating clubs.
The owner must be a paid member of NCCC
The horse must be nominated to NCCC

NCCC Titles and Awards are based in points earned within categories and in Open, Amateur, Novice Amateur, and Youth Divisions. A minimum of 5 points must be earned for an award.

NCCC uses the same points system as CCC. Check the California Paint Horse Directory for the points tabulation guide (or go online to: www.horseservices.com/ccc). The exception is that NCCC awards additional points for halter champion and reserve halter champion, whereas, CCC does not give additional halter points.

NCCC Awards Ceremony is held as a guest at one of the participating clubs year-end awards banquets.

NCCC Membership, Horse Nominations forms, and a copy of horse(s) registration papers must be mailed to the NCCC membership coordinator, June Proctor, 9230 Sunset Blvd West, Pleasant Grove, CA 95668, 916-655-3541. Blank forms are available from clubs or from June Proctor or online at www.horseservices.com/nccc.

NCCC rules and points are posted on line at www.horseservices.com/nccc. NCCC points and the membership lists are available at most NCCC approved shows.

Club and Awards Program
Every club's by-laws and year-end awards programs differ, and it would be too lengthy to delve into them here.
For Paint Horse club information, including their year-end awards programs it is suggested each club be contacted.

Other club contact points can be found in the California Paint Horse Directory.

Thank you to Jennifer Breslin for creating the original version of this Paint Primer. Hopefully, this document will help new members understand the many opportunities that are available to them as exhibitors of Paint Horses in California.
